In My Kitchen: Learning

(Joining Heather for the kitchen blog hop).

At my university (like many), we have a Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL).  While Anya was trying to make baked doughnuts (more of a muffin than a doughnut) on her own Tuesday, it occurred to me that--at least for this summer--the kitchen is kind of the OTL in the house.  This was reinforced when, the next morning, she insisted that we supervise while she made her own scrambled eggs (eaten alongside a baked doughnut).

The kitchen as OTL not only captures Anya's desire to learn more about cooking and baking, but also our parental commitment to using the summer schedule to make sure that the kids develop habits of making their own food, contributing to dinner preparation (not always feasible when school is on for three of the four of us), and set up and clean up.  All a learning process.  Life skills.  And, hopefully, a time of communion with each other.

Sam, however, is less interested in the learning aspects of cooking and baking than in eating the products thereof...though sometimes he keeps us company, cubes in hand (the picture only shows about 1/3 of his cube collection...!)  (Okay, in his defense, he already knows how to cook a few things, he's just not interested in learning more.)

What learning is going on in your kitchen?

  1. I've read of a few people with similar projects with their children in the kitchen this week. My daughter's grown up now but I love that I see the things she's remembered from a cooking at home as a child and sharing time with me and her dad in the kitchen.
    happy summer days.

    1. Debby, that sounds lovely. I had my kids OLD (36 & 40), so it's all a strange new experience to me!

    1. I hope she continues with it. I learned to bake when I was a kid, but cooking only came later.

    1. I agree! I wish I had more time during the whole year to teach the kids here, but summer it is!

  4. Now it's my turn. I have the yellow bowl and I have a million Rubik cubes of my sons' all over the house! I only have that LeCreuset pot because I live near a LeCrueset factory outlet and it is a second (though I don't even remember what the flaw was). Have a great day!

  5. My son is off (with my husband) at a speed cubing competition even as I write this. I do hope that this phase passes soon! I do know of a LeCrueset outlet nearby--I should check it out...

  6. Wow. The ol' Rublik's cube. I was just wondering a while back if they still made them and how rich the creator must have gotten off those.
    Have a great weekend,
